Pattern: Milkweed shawl by Laura Chau

Yarn: Socks that rock mediumweight in 24 karat

Needles: US 4

Notes: A bit early for this color perhaps, but come September I will be ready!  I had absolutely no problems with this pattern – there may have been some small errors (now corrected) in the written directions, but the charts were perfect.  I did get a wee bit tired of knitting – I long for something with purl rows now!  I always enjoy it when a pattern has everything written out, rather than making you guess, and this patttern answered all my questions.

The yarn… well, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I hoped.  It was kind of stiff, and had that superwash squeak that I enjoy so little.  It really needed blocking, because it was pretty stiff off the needles.  It did soften up ok, and I absolutely love the color!  I did a russian bind off on the last row, and all that K2tog killed my hands – I’m not sure it would usually, but this yarn was just so unforgiving for some reason!  I am very glad that the lovely color will not be hidden in my shoes, and I’m plotting more sock yarn as shawls and scarves.

Pretty amazing. And what a great idea to use sock yarn for shawls. It seems like they would be more wearable then. Hmm…

  3. Beautiful. How much yarn did you use?

That looks awesome! Too funny, I am getting ready to cast on the same pattern and in almost the same color. I am using BMFA lightweight in Oregon Red Clover Honey. Great minds think alike! :)

Such a pretty shawl! The haircut and color look really lovely, too. Does this mean you stopped trying to grow it out?

Very pretty. I especially like that first photo. It looks vintage, like a portrait taken in the 30’s or 40’s. I just bought sock yarn for a kerchief last night, but I forgot to check if it was superwash. I agree, it would be better it be untreated if it is not to be socks.

I just happened to stumble across your site and I’ve fallen in love with it! That shawl is fantastic and the colour is gorgeous. I’m a Louisville native myself and I was curious where you buy yarn locally. My favourite knitting shop closed a few years ago and I’ve been bouncing between The Knit Nook on B-town road and a new place I found called Sophie’s Yarn way out near Lake Forest. Any suggestions?

I love your shawl (as a summer girl, I’ll pretend it’s a different color for now) :) . Makes me want to get out the lace again. If you have any tips for styling vintage clothes with your knits, I’d love to read that post. I have some great purses and things, but always worry about looking costume-y. You always make things look just right!

Lovely! I’m thinking of doing it in the very last of my charcoal and white Koigu – seeing it on the body helps me get a picture of how it will come out. Merci!
