And now there’s this…

You know… I get occasional trollish comments, and I just delete them and move on.  But this morning I got one that was so nasty that it actually made me cry, and that is just not on.

“Rochelle”

I used to really enjoy your blog, however i so dislike the direction it has taken.  Your journey of knitting and sewing was so awe inspiring!  Now it seems to be all about obsessive and compulsive work-outs and weight training, along with low-calorie smoothie recipes, and “clean-eating” tips.  If you decide to get off of this self-absorbed obsessiveness and back to sharing your sewing and knitting tips and skills, maybe I’ll return.  You had a great blog that has sadly gone down the toilet.  You might want to turn the focus off yourself for a change and look around for a more fulfilling focal point.

You know… I really do try to be honest on the blog.  If I have something going on I’m going to talk about it, usually good or bad.  After I got this message I scrolled back, wondering if I had morphed into a health and lifestyle blog without noticing?  Nope… three posts about non-sewing in the past 5 months, and 2 of them were about tea, a different topic to be sure but not one that should inspire such anger.  One recipe (which was, thank you, not low calorie, as the whole big smoothie, which I can assure you I drank, had about 350 calories.)  Were you concerned about the sweet n low?  Because if that bothers you, you wouldn’t want to see what I put in my coffee.

My workouts are not “obsessive.”  I workout 5 or 6 days a week for between 35 and 45 minutes.  If I have to miss one it does not ruin my life.  I’m proud of myself for being healthy, and creating new healthy habits.  I certainly don’t post every day about my workouts, except for an occasional mention (as in the year end post.)  About the clean eating thing… is there a clean eating diet?  Yes.  Am I on it?  No.  When I say that, what I mean is that I’m attempting to eat fewer overly processed foods (um… except the coffee with sweet n low, obviously)  as I think many of us are these days!  I do like the magazine, because the recipes are great.  I am trying to eat more often, but quite frankly that’s good for me, as I’ve always been of the “starve if it’s not a meal” philopsophy of eating, which isn’t super healthy.

And I can understand honest concern, because I have blogged before about my body issues.  That’s fair, and I would probably think the same thing.  I’ve said I have an obsessive personality, and I do.  But I think there is difference – when I say obsessive, what I really mean is that I tend to be driven to learn as much as possible about a given topic, whether that’s sewing, exercise, or even the culture of tea drinking.  I’m very knowledge driven – I want to know about things, and I will pursue a topic with great excitement.  But that doesn’t mean it takes over my life.  There  has to be a balance, and at this point in life I know where that is.

I am a real person, and I think it’s easy to forget that over the internet.  I likely have interests and things going on in my life that I don’t mention here. It’s easy to feel like you know someone because of their blog, but do you really?  Do you assume that because I mention sewing here that all I do all day is obsess about sewing?  That I have no friends because I sit sequestered with my machine, sewing until my fingers bleed?  I don’t do anything involving these interests for a living, and my blog is a place where I can talk about my interests.  Would you say something like this to a real person, someone you know in real life?  Because, quite frankly, if that’s the case then I can’t imagine you’re very pleasant to be around.  But you probably wouldn’t, because we all forget that on the other side of the internet is a real person.

Lord knows I haven’t given up sewing.  I haven’t had a lot of finished things lately, mostly because I’m back in school, working full time, and I have all my performing obligations as well.  And quite frankly, if you want to know what’s currently eating my sewing time, it’s my need to finally complete Final Fantasy X.  Is that weird and dorky?  Yes, but I wear that badge with pride!  The balance will swing around again, as it does in life.

It’s also worth noting that no one is anonymous on the internet.  Yes, I can see who you are.  I can even get an idea of where this anger comes from, but it really doesn’t make me feel much better as the target.

Dear internets:  I know this is asking a lot, but maybe we could all learn how to be a little bit less angry, and a little but more understanding.

  1. My thought on this is that it’s YOUR blog, and you can write about what you damn well please! You are by no means obligated to stick to a certain genre.. This is yours to write about what moves you. Don’t change a thing.

    1. hear, hear. as long as you’re doing positive changes that you feel good about, go for it and keep people who care posted. if others don’t like it they can simply stop reading your blog.

    2. I agree with Leigh. YOUR blog that you freely (!!!!!) share with US. You do as you please and we can take it or leave it. I personally love your little detours. Part of what I enjoy most about your blog is that it’s REAL. You are you and you shows us your strengths and concerns and passions and life strategies. Continue to delete moronic comments by people who are disrespectful and abusive, and have forgotten that this is your space and they are just visiting.

  2. I don’t comment much but I get your posts to my email and read them there.

People like that troll have a way of ruining things for everyone. And they’d hate my blog, because its purely about my weight loss, diet, and exercise. Other topics are few and far between. But guess what? It’s my blog and I can use it for whatever I’d like! 😀

I love your blog and the things you post. I think your choices of sewing and knitting projects are awesome, and I love how honest you are about how you feel about each completed piece. Don’t change things up or get too bent over this person- you have tons of friends out here on the net who love what you do!

  3. On my blog, I write about what’s going on in my life, and what I’m excited about sharing–sewing-related or not. I like other blogs that do the same–yours included. Like you said, we all have multiple, layered things going on in our lives! Why limit your blog to one narrow thing? Don’t let this comment get you down.

  4. I am so sorry to hear that you have been hurt by this unthinking, obviously dysfunctional person. Please know that I have been following your blog since this past summer and have thoroughly enjoyed all of your posts. You seem to be a very intelligent person who has a love of learning, as I do. People never change and there will always be those who say and do unkind things. I thought your reply back in this post was excellent. But, remember, you do not have to defend your blog, or you for that matter. It is a wonderful blog and your blogosphere personality and activities are inspiring! Thanks for it all.

  5. People are ridiculous. Even if your blog had changed overnight into an “ancient sword-fighting enthusiast” blog or something even more random, isn’t that your choice? Why do people assume you owe them something? Anyway, you go girl, keep doing what makes you happy and let the haters hate.

  6. ?!?!?!?!?! Wow! I can understand it if someone reads a blog and doesn’t like it after a while – I’ve actually had subscribers “leave” my blog because it wasn’t what they wanted to read – but lashing out like that in a comment is nothing short of bad manners. It’s also hard because the written word reads so harshly – it doesn’t have body language or facial expressions or tone of voice to put it into context. My first impulse is to delete nasty comments, and the next it to feel sorry for the person that left the comment. Forgive and move on is my motto! And enjoy sharing your journey, wherever the road takes you, because it’s encouraging to many people! As my dad used to tell me, if only two people out of 10 think you’re fun, skip the 8 and go with the two.

  7. Yikes, I’m sorry you got that comment. I for one love your blog, and I like hearing about other peoples lives. I think you should ignore that comment and keep doing what you’re doing.

  8. What an awful (and RIDICULOUS) comment. I mean, besides all of the mean things just not being true, hello, it’s YOUR personal blog. You can blog about whatever you want. It’s so so so so easy to….not read a blog, if you feel like not reading it. Argh, PEOPLE.

Anyways, I’m really sorry that that comment made you cry. I don’t comment much, but your posts ALWAYS make me happy. Always! Please continue to post about whatever you want. And if that includes FF, that would make me quite happy. I believe X was the last FF that I played with my brother, back when we played video games together. Good times!

  9. I’m new to your blog and I love it. I hadn’t picked up any obsessive tendencies, just an ability to write about topics in a knowledgeable and interesting way.

I am always astonished when people comment on blogs in this manner. What happened to good old fashioned courtesy. My mother always said “if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all”. Maybe its something we should return to.

And why do the people with such tendencies not have the courage of their convictions and feel the need to hide behind the “anonymous” tag. Just askin’!

  10. That whole comment strikes me as bizarre. Aren’t blogs all about ourselves anyway? We are sharing our ideas, what WE think is interesting, etc., and hope others might feel the same. It’s not about putting out what you think someone else might find interest in. That commenter seems unnecessarily angry and critical and it makes me think that you were just an unfortunate victim of some transference. Good grief. I read your blog because your personality is interesting, and shoot, I like the obsessiveness. I’m obsessive too, and even if I’m not going to get into tea, for example, I can read about it if I choose, scan it, click away, and come back again. That’s how blogging works.

You keep doing what you’re doing, and I applaud you for your writing and exercise and love of tea and sewing and whatever it is that makes YOU tick. Share what you will – you’ll always have readers.

  11. How utterly rude!!! I enjoy your blog and every post that comes through, but am more of a reader than a commenter. Hard not to, but don’t let people like this get to you – they are just not worth it. Keep up the blogging – in the direction you want to blog about….

  12. I’ve never commented on your blog, but have been reading it for a while. While I did start reading your blog for the sewing, I love all the other things you do too. Sorry you received such a nasty comment. I never understood why people feel like they need to make a comment like that.

  13. Sorry you had to deal with that ugly comment! Count me in as someone who has been reading your blog for years and will continue to do so in the future. I think it’s great (and inspiring) that you’re working toward improving your health and happiness.

And as an even better testimonial to the fact that I find your blog interesting, despite any tangents your posts might take–I don’t sew! Like, not even a tiny bit. I started following you when you were mostly posting about knitting, but I’m still around because I like your outlook and commentary on things.

I think negative people tend to accuse others of things they’re guilty of themselves. This person is obviously very self-absorbed–after all, she’s demanding that you alter your personal blog to fit her tastes!

  14. Plain and simple: this is your blog. If I find a blog to be not exactly what I want to read, I unsubscribe because it’s my choice to read your blog or not to. It truly angers me to my core that someone felt like they can direct what your blog should or should not contain (they rank right up there with people who don’t use a turn signal). Pay no attention to this idiot. We love you and your blog!! 🙂 ((hugs))

  15. I LOVE this post. Thank you for addressing the lack of manners that is a little too common on the internets. I’ve been a reader for a while. I actually like the fact that you mention your other interests. I’d be a bit worried if it sounded like all you ever thought about was sewing. : )

  16. My grandma always said that if you can’t say anything nice you shouldn’t say anything at all. Typically, if I lose interest in the content of a blog I just leave. No need to be snotty about it. It’s sort of like if you don’t like what’s on TV you change the channel or turn it off–you don’t call up the TV station and make an ass of yourself. Or maybe some people do….?

I’m sorry that you had some negativity, though I also know that it’s just part of the experience. You can’t let it get you down, because for every hater out there, there’s 100 more that love your blog as it is. 🙂

  17. Good for you for speaking out against this. That comment is absurd! People seem to forget that saying nothing when you have nothing nice to say is still a respectable choice. A Buddhist monk once said that we should ask three questions before speaking: Is it the truth? Is it kind? Is it necessary? If you don’t answer yes to all three then you keep your mouth shut. Perhaps she could use this piece of advice.

  18. I have been pretty lucky about not receiving many negative comments on my blog, but I can totally empathize about how awful it must feel. I love your blog and always look forward to your posts. I think this post was wonderful. Well said!

  19. wow. the vitriol is a bit much. if you don’t enjoy what someone is posting, then don’t read it. having a blog is self-focused by design. someone needs to relax.

  20. How terrible! I’ve had a few nasty comments on my blog, but never one as bad as that. I’m joining in the chorus of your supporters who say YOUR blog is for YOU to write about what YOu want, and it’s just too bad that one ugly person out in cyberspace set out to ruin your day. I started reading Green Apples back when it was primarily about knitting, and I’ve kept reading through all the different topics you address because, frankly, you’re a good writer and you always have something interesting to say, whether it’s about knitting, sewing, fashion, or tea!

  21. I’ve been reading your blog for a couple years, and I don’t think I’ve ever commented–horrible, I know! When I first started reading, this was mostly a knitting blog, and I’ve been really inspired by all the things you’ve tackled in the past year or so–quitting your job, becoming a very good seamstress, exploring your personal style, working toward a healthier life…You have so much to be proud of!! Brava, Jessica! Don’t let the meanies bring you down (something tells me that you won’t) 😉

  22. I’ve only commented once in the many years that I’ve been reading your blog, but I have to de-lurk to join everyone in telling you that I really enjoy your blog, and I appreciate that you share areas of your life beyond sewing, knitting and crocheting. I have never gotten the impression that your new-found commitment to healthy exercise and nutrition were at all obsessive, just something that you unexpectedly enjoyed and were excited to share with all of us. I find it interesting to see other people’s journeys in areas with which I struggle myself, and I have always found you to be genuine and honest.

I agree with the others who have responded that the comment you received was very selfish. This is your blog. It should whatever direction you need or want it to. I, for one, will keep reading.

  23. Sounds like somebody was wearing her (his?) cranky pants and then left you a nasty comment. Well, you have always seemed far too kind to say what needs to be said in response, so I’ll do it for you:

    Hey Grumpy McCrankypants,
If you don’t like what you see on this blog, just move along WITHOUT leaving any attitude behind.
    P.S. Bite me.

Seriously, though, try not to let it get you down. It’s your blog, with your thoughts on your posts. And, I think the overwhelming majority of us like your blog just fine.

  24. Now that’s just plain rude. This is your blog and you can write about what you please, we are guests in your space here and you deserve to be treated with respect by the people who visit. I can’t understand why the horrid person didn’t just stop reading instead of spouting such nonsense. Shame on them.

  25. It is YOUR blog! You have absolutely no obligation to write about anything other than what you feel writing about. You have absolutely no need to defend writing about topics such as work-outs, diet, cooking etc. It is YOUR blog and YOUR choice. It is the troll’s choice whether to read it or not. Her comments are just rude. I haven’t commented much on your blog before but am an avid reader. No matter what you blog about! I have an occasional troll on mine too. I just delete everything she says and ignore her. Because her comments say way, way more about what is going on inside her head than they do about my blog. Have faith and keep on blogging about whatever takes your fancy! As I said – it is YOUR blog!

  26. I’m sorry someone felt the need to send this to you. I just started my own sewing and knitting blog, and was just thinking to myself this morning how everyone I’ve encountered thus far has been so supportive and nice! I think that her comments are not only uncalled for, but really just ridiculous. I’ve been reading your blog for a while, and seeing your finished projects is my favorite part. but if you post about something I’m not interested in, I just skip the post! its not anyone’s job but your own to decide what you want to write about on your blog. And seeing your progress with exercising has been inspiring to me anyway.

  27. As someone who has been subjected to the same kind of attack, I totally understand how you feel and commiserate with you. You bring out some really good points about how people feel they know you from reading your blog forgetting there is an entire life that is just not put on your blog…and also feeling like they can say whatever to you because it is their truth. I don’t know if this will help but there are so many more of us out here who appreciate you and what you share of your life with us. I hope that you realize that we don’t want this to affect you and the precious space that you’ve carved out here on the internet. And I’m sending you a cyberhug because I care and understand!

  28. pfftt to them! Your blog, what you want to say! I think it is wonderful that you try to balance your life between sewing, knitting, exercise and whatever else makes you happy and well. The reality is that your health is actually the most important thing in your life because without that there would be no life. There is no need for you or your blog to change. I would take this comment as a huge compliment as obviously they love your sewing and knitting posts. So who here is actually self-obsessed?

  29. Oh Jessica, that’s awful! It’s YOUR blog and you can blog about whatever you like–it’s not like this woman was paying you to write sewing tips and tutorials for her! I loved your recent posts about tea and I certainly don’t expect other sewing bloggers to ONLY 100% talk about SEWING AND NOTHING ELSE OR ELSE.

Trolls are the worst, and I’m surprised they even turn up on sewing blogs! Mean comments are one of the reasons I quit political cartooning–I’d put my heart into a cartoon and spend hours on it… and for all my trouble, I’d mostly get death threats, nasty comments about my looks, racist comments and attacks on my husband/daughter… you name it. I wasn’t getting paid enough for the emotional trauma.

    1. That’s why I was so surprised – I’ve been blogging for 6 years and only had a handful of off comments, even when I totally stopped knitting for quite awhile. And never one that nasty, so it was shocking. I’m sorry to hear the reasons why you quit your job, though I can certainly understand – I have thought before that the political cartoonist must have to deal with a lot, as people can be just so completely uncivil, especially online. I’m glad you seem to be in a happier place now (and are blogging again – yay!)

  30. It’s your blog and you can say what you want…if they don’t like it, they can keep on moving. No need for the insults.

  31. I follow your blog because I like you. You seem nice and I enjoy reading about your life, your crafts and anything else you have to say (particularly enjoying the tea posts at the moment since I’m British!). Its not like I’m paying to read your blog. I don’t expect regular updates, or anything on any particular topic. I just want to read what you have to say when you want to say it. Ignore anyone that feels otherwise! x

  32. Thank-you so much for your blog, I have read it for months, enjoy it and look forward to ALL your posts. Your blog, your choice of subject matter. I `am not sure what motivates trolls and I am sorry that you have been upset.

You have inspired me with your creativity, honesty and general “get stuckinedness” with every thing you do.

Down with rudeness and hoorah for good manners, well done for sharing the comment ad your feelings about it.

  33. Hi, I’ve never commented before but I’m very sorry you received such a nasty comment. I can’t imagine the mindset that would say something so bitter. Your blog is lovely and very inspirational. And I think most people who read personal blogs are interested in the person writing them. Even though I don’t know you personally, it’s nice to hear about other things you’re interested in, like tea recommendations or exercise routines you’ve enjoyed. Or anything else you feel like sharing. 🙂 Where are you in FF-X?

    1. I’ve just left Bevelle, and I’m in the Calm Lands. Not so far from the end then (I’ve not actually finished before, I quit the last time I played it after the blitzball tournament!) Thank you for your comment – it’s nice to hear from so many people who I didn’t know were reading!

  34. Well said! This is your blog, and not anyone else’s!

Don’t let it get you down. Some people just have to be mean to make themselves feel better. I love your blog. I’ve been reading it for years, before you started sewing and when it was all about knitting. For what it’s worth, I enjoy the direction your blog has taken (and I enjoyed it just as much before, too!).

  35. I don’t think “Rochelle” is worth another minute of your time. Her comment says more about herself than it ever could about your lovely blog.

  36. Don’t let them get to you. There seem to be a subset of people who think they get a vote and use the “anonymity” of the internet to act like tantrumish toddlers when they are having a bad day, don’t like change or just feel like being a twit.

Blogs are “personal web logs” – people can follow or not but they are, for a large part, about the author and whatever the author wants to talk about. So keep talking about what YOU want and ignore the twits. Just delete the mails or comments, ban them if they continue to be jerks, and move on.

Unfortunately, courtesy, civility and kindness are impossible to enforce.

  37. Must join in support of you and your blog! Rochelle’s a girl who’s never experienced the endorphins from exercise! ha ha 🙂 Seriously, I was actually hoping you post more on your chalean workouts – they are supposed to be great. Btw, I emailed you last year sometime for a review of your Brother serger, and you were kind enough to answer all my questions! So keep up the good work!

  38. I am another who very rarely comments but reads every one of your posts. I just wanted to add my support. There’s not much that’s easier than unsubscribing to a blog that no longer interests you. I’m mystified and angry that someone would feel the need to announce this decision at all, much less in such a wretchedly hateful way. I hope you can put it behind you soon, if you haven’t already.

  39. First time commenter (I think?) but I’ve been reading your blog for a few months 🙂

I never get why people do that kind of thing – if you don’t like it, just stop reading it!!! There’s no need to write a nasty comment about it.

Post about whatever the hell you want. Sane people will just skip over the posts that they have little interest in.

  40. Yours is one of the first blogs that I started reading, and in fact it got me inspired to start blogging on my own. I love reading about your projects and even what parts of your life you do choose to share. Like many other commenters, I had to de-lurk to agree that it’s YOUR blog, and unless someone is paying you for sewing/knitting content, they have no right to demand that you write about what they want to read. I know how those comments can stick, and I wish you all the best in mental recovery and your future blog posts, no matter what they’re about!

Also, playing FF is probably why I didn’t do as well as I could have in my first year of college!

  41. That sucks. Yours is one of my favorite blogs. In fact, I was just checking my blog to see if any of my favorites had any updates, and there you were, and I thought “oh good! I love her blog!”
I am also a work-out enthusiast and have a Bachelor of Music in singing, and love sewing and like sci-fi, and can even appreciate a little gaming, so there’s a lot about your blog that appeals to me. Truth be told, I have a bit of a blog-crush (in a totally non-creepy way). Please keep up with the posts, and don’t worry about that (insert many expletives here).

    1. Oh, thank you! That’s great that we have so much in common – you know, I have a lot of music graduate friends who are really into sci-fi. It seems to go with the personality type for some reason! Thank you for the comment, it really helped!

  42. Rochelle apparently thinks a “more fulfilling focal point” would be her. Talk about self-absorbed. She doesn’t understand that your blog does not exist for the sole purpose of entertaining her. Don’t let her steal one more bit of your time or energy, she’s not worth it.
The rest of us enjoy what you choose to share.

  43. ‘Chin up chook’ – You don’t need that reader. This is your blog, do as you like. I can understand why this one got you though, but at least you know – from all of these comments – that you have a lot of support.

  44. Phew! I really love your blog. I’ve gained a lot of inspiration from you. Sewing, knitting, and food! I think sewing does dovetail with body image issues. I know that analysing my own body in order to achieve a better fit is sometimes unsettling. I think all sewers must feel this way from time to time, so in my opinion, posts on thfar ow and then are not off-topic.
You have a lot of fans!

  45. That was completely unnecessary! I think the internet makes people ruder. I don’t know you, I can’t see you and there are no real ramifications for my actions. If I stop enjoying a blog like I used to I just stop reading. Its a blog, not a professional website. 99.9% of blogs are used for self expression and they take quite a bit of time and commitment to maintain. I think that Miss Insulting needs to look beyond herself and stop being so self obsessed and find a more fulfilling focal point than making rude and snarky comments to people she doesn’t know.

I have enjoyed your workout posts, personally. I used to be a ballet dancer and I miss the body awareness that brought me. I am also a smoothie drinker so I appreciated your recipe. I never thought about xantham gum before. I enjoy an informative side track now and then. Bloggers are people not machines. I enjoy blogs because I enjoy sharing interests with others.

  46. I am very sorry to hear about such a terrible comment. I really don’t understand how people can behave that way. I really like your paragraph starting with, “I am a real person…”. Well stated.

  47. Sorry to hear you’ve been upset -as nearly everyone else has said, you should write about whatever you like. If people don’t like it, they don’t have to read. What a mean spirited commenter – if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all!

  48. delete delete delete any comment that doesn’t make you feel good. it’s your blog and we readers are *LUCKY* that you’re making it public. this is your place to document part of who you are and part of what you’re doing. don’t second guess yourself & there is no need to justify your posts with us readers.

  49. Also, have you heard of Stevia? Its a great natural sweetener that I use with certain things, in particular my teas. Its a great option to look into that is not articificial.

  50. What a jerk. Most people have already said it. Your blog, write what you want. I am enjoying your other posts. I never would’ve heard of the Red Velvet tea if not for your post. Rock on and don’t let the a-holes bring you down. 🙂

  51. I am literally the opposite of you – I work a 9-5 technical job and my only workout is walking the dog! But I have been enjoying what you share about your life over these past years. Yes, knitting and sewing is part of that life, but so is your music and your smoothies and your tea!

We do share one thing – a distaste for breakfast! So I guess I do have some self-interest in begging you not to stop posting smoothie recipes if you find any more good ones!

    1. Here is one I had today: 1 cup almond milk, 1.5 tsp pumpkin pie spice, 1/4 cup pureed canned pumpkin (not the pie filling), 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, sweetener to taste, and 1/2 cup coffee frozen into ice cubes. You can use vanilla extract instead of protein powder. It’s like a frozen pumpkin latte!

Thank you for your comment – I am glad that you enjoy my blog. And hey, don’t knock walking the dog. My Mom has an Irish wolfhound, and that thing takes me for walks when I dogsit!

  52. I first found you through ravelry, and I love seeing your knitting and sewing projects. However, I also love keeping and staying in shape, and I find if you keep an open mind, you might actually find a new interest. I am sorry that one comment bothered you, but I hope you don’t stop being true to yourself and sharing what you enjoy. You obviously have a lot of followers that love your blog.

  53. Yours is a very inspiring blog – always has been for me. Personally, one of the things I love about blogs is their fluidity and the way that content can change as a life moves forwards and in new directions. Trolls are an unfortunate presence on the Internet – saying this makes comments no less upsetting. But the sad truth is that as technology and humanity have come together, it’s thrown a harsh light on how some people operate. We need to remember that these attackers are a minority. You have a warm and loving audience – never forget that.

  54. Saying that you’ve become self centered is pretty ridiculous, it’s YOUR blog, of course it’s centered around you and you can post about whatever you want. I personally post about some of my own obsessions that I doubt may people would be interested in, and if that’s the case then they can just keep on walking (clicking? scrolling?).

  55. I’ve been reading for over a year now, but this is my first comment. As already said: your blog, your space – you get to write about what you want! I enjoy getting to know a bit more about you from the non-sewing posts, so don’t stop! And anytime you get another trolly comment, come back here and read these comments and don’t worry about it x

  56. I usually do not post…but I just had to respond to you on this! It seems as this troll needs to look into themselves and see their problem…can’t she/he just stop reading the blog, without leaving nasty comments that hurt feelings?? It is just like people complaining about watching something on TV that offends them…can’t you just turn the channel??? As my SIL’s niece says….Everybody is different! and she is FIVE!!

  57. Hey It’s YOUR blog and you can talk about whatever the hell you want to!! Seriously! I subscribe to your blog and if I’m not into a post I just move on..Silliness! I enjoy your posts don’t let one turkey ruin things for you!

  58. I’m a long time reader but I don’t comment very often. I just wanted to say I don’t think your blog has changed at all. i still love reading just as much now as when I first started.

Some people just feel the need to write hurtful things for no reason. They like to make others feel bad in an attempt to make themselves feel good. I’m sorry that this has happened to you. It’s really not fair and people do need to realise that bloggers are real people. On the other end of the comments is a real person reading them with real feelings.

  59. It seems to be getting more and more often that horrible little people like ‘Rochelle’ are attacking bloggers. I just don’t understand it. I really like your blog and your honesty, and I think the support of all the other commenters show that she’s on her own with her views. I’m really sorry that she upset you so much though. No one deserves to find that in their inbox.

  60. I’ve never commented on your blog before, but I honestly think the worst thing about the internet is that it has erased many peoples’ senses of what is appropriate to say to others, and what is kind, or decent, or even acceptable. I think you are lovely, and your blog is lovely, and I think we all only get one side of each other on a blog, just what the blogger chooses to display. I heartily enjoy your musings on material, body image and smoothies, and even if I didn’t, I don’t think it would be fair to deride and insult you because of it. People on the internet don’t simply exist to make me happy. It’s sad that many readers don’t know that.

    strugglesewsastraightseam.wordpress.com

  61. You have a fan in me and many other people. I hope you’re feeling better. I admire your drive and your skills and always look forward to reading whatever you write.

  62. I think that it is normal for people’s interests to morph over time and I find your blog to be a healthy representation of this. I enjoy how you write about your life and your interests. Many of your interests parallel my own and I look forward to all of the topics you choose to write about in the future.

  63. Well clearly your blog is just going to fall off the face of the earth if she doesn’t read it……… some people!
I for one was super pumped when you said you were starting to work out and weight train. Doesn’t it feel awesome!
Keep doing what you are doing and by the amount of comments you have received on this post, you’re doing fine without her 🙂

  64. Keep doing what makes you happy. This is a great blog.

If you can’t say it to someones face, it probably shouldn’t be said. I question if this person could actually say these things to your face.

  65. Isn’t the whole point of a blog to write about what you want to? Frankly I started mine so I could track my interests and write about what I wanted. As a reader we have a choice – read or not read. Please keep writing about whatever you want. For the record I really enjoy blogs that mix it up and are not just about one thing. We are all multifaceted people.

  66. Do people forget that they are not obliged to read any blog. If it’s not to their liking, don’t read it. I love seeing all that you sew but also have enjoyed the tips on the smoothies and your exercising. Write about what you want. It’s your blog.

  67. Wow what a totally uncalled for and senseless comment. I first read your blog because of your awesome sewn creations, but have really enjoyed reading about your new exercise and tea drinking habits – and applaud you for looking out for number one! Your blog is a very interesting read, and as readers we are lucky that you share your projects and thoughts with us.
I can’t decide what is most ridiculous about her comment, but it may be the suggestion to “turn the focus off yourself”… on your blog!!! What on earth goes on in the minds of internet trolls – who think they can dictate the contents of blogs they read!!!!! As one commenter said earlier, this type of comment says a lot about what type of person “Rochelle” is, and nothing about what type of person/what type of blog you have. Your readers support you!

  68. I’m so sorry that that girl felt she had to be so nasty to you. Whatever happened to our grandmother’s advice of “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” ? As you can see by all of the supportive comments above mine, we love reading what you have to say. I wish that I could be as organised as you to not only sew but to be able to write about it in an interesting way. Maybe someday….but for now, I’ll dream about it and read what you have to say — don’t let it get you down!

  69. I agree with what others have said; you don’t owe your readers anything. I’ve read your blog for years, and was always inspired by your knitting, and now you’re sewing. Your ability to create wearable garments is awesome! You’ve got great style. I’m so sorry the comment hurt your feelings. I’m sure I’d have the same reaction.

  70. I almost de-lurked yesterday to tell you thank you for the awesome recipe! I was delighted with the “direction” your blog took…whatever that was supposed to mean!

It is easy to relate to you, that’s why I read your blog (not just for the crafting). I don’t relate to your commenter so I will join you in blowing her off!

  71. Please. That commenter obviously has some issues in their life and taking out their frustrations in inappropriate avenues. She does not understand how to approach things positively. You blog is just that – yours. I found your blog through the sewing posts and enjoy it. If you wanted to start talking about unicorns with every post, it’s your choice. If I wasn’t interested in it, what would I do? skip it. Or, maybe I would read it and learn something. But either way, it’s your choice what to write about. It’s not like this is a paid sewing tutorial service.

  72. I personally enjoy your blog and the occasional non sewing/knitting posts because its an opportunity to learn something new. Don’t let that girl ruin your day. This is your space and you should post what you like.

  73. How rude! Who owns this blog anyway? If they don’t like your content they are free to find another blog to follow. Continue to be true to yourself and may God go with them…

  74. I honestly love your blog, but it’s YOUR blog, write about what YOU want to write about! What you should do is put up more non-sewing related posts and then hopefully that person will no longer be back here!

  75. Love reading your blog, love the knitting, because I like to knit. I used to sew years ago, and so find your sewing really ineresting, and keep telling myself maybe one day I will get my sewing machine out! And find other subjects very interesting, and enjoyable, and to be honest and at the end of the day Its your blog and your choice.

  76. I would just like to say that Green Apples is one of my favorite blogs. I always look forward to reading your posts (and shame on me for never telling you so!). And although it may not make up for the bad comments, here is one happy reader who hopes you will keep posting.

I appreciate a good argument and thought provoking comments, but lashing out in such a negative manner does neither party any good – especially when you have done nothing to deserve the verbal lashing.

And let’s be honest, each and every blog out there is a bit self-indulgent (hopefully in a good way!), but no one is forcing anyone to read anything.

So if you want to share your sewing, or a new and nutritious recipe, I say go right ahead. You will have at least one interested reader! (And after reading the comments I expect there are quite a few others who feel the same way.)

I think I am going to go home tonight and write as many positive comments on as many lovely blogs as I can find.

  77. Everyone’s already said it better than I can, but I want to add my cyber hug. I always find your blog entries interesting, and, you know what, even if one day I don’t find it interesting, you still have the right to shout it from the rooftops and be happy. 🙂 Keep on doing your thing, whatever it is!!

  78. I don’t think i have ever commented on your blog and rarely on others. When I do comment it is usually to thank someone for putting themselves out there. This is YOUR blog, not that person’s blog, not mine, not anyone’s but yours. I started reading you blog some time ago and I was drawn to it because of knitting….but I’ve stayed with it because of you. Many of the issues you raise are issues I deal with myself and many, many other people deal with. I feel sorry for the commenter who felt the need to spew her own self loathing and hatred all over your blog. Please rest assured, that that comment was probably less about you and more about her unhappiness. Chin up, soldier on…we will keep coming back. Of course, should any person who reads your blog decide one day that it is no longer for them….they can choose not to return and I hope they are big enough people to do so without dumping on you.

  79. Thank you for your honest and thoughtful post. The internet is wonderfully diverse, so people can choose to read whatever they are interested in and ignore everything else. I choose to read your blog because I am interested in your thoughts on a variety of topics, including sewing. I’ve been very interested in your exercise journey, so thanks for sharing!

  80. It is YOUR blog and you should feel free to write about whatever you want. I think you are awesome and that lady was so rude. Keep doing what you’re doing! We love you.

  81. I don’t know why people have to be nasty instead of just clicking “unsubscribe” if they’re unhappy. I’m sure it’s hard when it’s directed at you, but try not let it get you down. Some people are just mean. 😦

  82. Hey there, I never comment, but love to read your blog and all parts of your journey. In fact this morning I saw the recipe for your yummy looking smoothie and ran out to find dark chocolate peanut butter! Don’t sweat the whiners and remember there are plenty of us lurkers about who love you!

  83. I like to read your blog, so please keep it up!

I recently decided to stop reading vegan-only blogs (since we’ve “gone paleo”), so I simply clicked the Unsubscribe button. No comments required. Easy, too!

I do think, however, that you could modify your About Me paragraph to include the updated facts of your journey. It might help bring even more readers to your blog.

  84. I remember that I use to get huffy when knitting blogs started talking about sewing and other crafts…until I did the same. LOL. I would never think to comment about it, though. A blog is a web log about whatever the author chooses. Unless you have others subscribe for a specific purpose like a sewalong, you get free reign. Some people just become too tunnel-visioned to see that they are out in left field. I am sorry you were brought to tears and hope all of our comments will show you the online support system that you do have.

  85. Another long-time reader chiming in to say I love your blog! I originally starting reading it for the knitting content, but even as a non-sewer I still really enjoy it. I find your posts informative and interesting, and I’ve been inspired to give sewing a shot! Although I’m still working up the courage. My sewing machine scares me.

So keep on keepin’ on with your fabulous blog, and write about whatever you want – so many of us will gladly read it!

  86. Wow. I’ve read your blog for a long time too. I may not always be interested in some topics, but that is on me, not you. Who is anyone to judge you and what you would like to talk about?? That’s just nuts. She should be embarrassed. We all have a choice to read what we want. There’s no obligation here.

And YOU just keep doing what makes you happy, and sharing whatever you would like to with the rest of us!! 🙂 You have a lot to offer!

  87. De-lurking to make my first post. Don’t sweat the jerks! I really can’t comprehend why this person thought you owed her anything. I came to your blog because of the sewing posts, but I’ve been loving the other topic stuff lately too! Thank you for writing!

  88. I rarely comment (although I love your blog), but this post is prompting me. I just want to add my words of support and outrage. I know how easy it can be to focus on the one hateful voice, but I hope that you will remind yourself to weigh it against the sea of those who love to read what you write. The poster who wrote that comment is just plain wrong.

I am constantly amazed that you can accomplish 10 times what I can in the same amount of time. In some ways, I live my creativity vicariously through your efforts (you knit at lightning speed compared to me, and although I sew, I can’t see myself tackling what you do). I can also relate to obsessively honing in on one thing and then, when I get my fill, I move on to something else (without necessarily abandoning the thing I was focused on – in my case: knitting, organizing) It’s satisfying.

And good for you for making a good diet and exercise a regular part of your life. That’s not obsession, it’s what we all should be doing. And it helps motivate me, so thank you.

  89. Oh now that’s just silly. I love to see what you are currently sewing/knitting or planning to sew/knit, but it’s also so nice to get snippets of the whole person. I can never understand why people bother making comments like that, don’t like it? then don’t read it.

  90. I think you are right that people do forget that bloggers are actually people!! I love your style, and although I can’t sew (YET!) I love seeing the outfits you put together. Like all blogs and websites (and books, magazines, and newspapers) if there is something that doesn’t interest me, then I skim! Perhaps Rochelle needs to learn how to do that!

  91. Oh. My. This made me jump out of obscurity! I love your blog and find it encouraging to myself not only about sewing and knitting, but about the healthy choices you are making. And blogs are personal. . .write whatever you want to write about!
    El

  92. I’ve been following your blog for about a year. I was intrigued by your sewing as I have just recently began sewing regularly. Like so many others have commented, I appreciate your drive to learn and your journey of continued self-discovery whether or not its on topics that I, myself, am interetsed in. It is YOUR blog, so please continue along your own path and let the rest of us enjoy the parts of the journey you choose to share.

  93. I subscribed to your blog a long time ago for the knitting content, and stayed because I enjoy your posts, regardless of topic it seems. You are a musician and close attention to detail goes with the territory, and why shouldn’t it apply to other areas of your life? Frankly, I am totally envious that you can throw yourself so totally into things you enjoy! My two kids mean my UFO list far exceeds my FO list lately. 🙂
Anyway, please do carry on as before, and don’t ever cry over the comments of strangers I again please.
    xo

  94. I. Love. Your. Blog. Please don’t let that mean person’s comments get you down. She apparently has a lot of time on her hands to waist it in negativity. She needs to rethink what a blog is. If she’d like blogs to be mono-focused she should start her own and shut her mouth. Blog on, I love the content!

  95. I am a long time lurker of this blog, one in which I enjoy, regardless of the topic! I hope your day is filled with much joy after seeing the support from all your supporters!

  96. Oh, dear. I’m so sorry that you received that comment and wish that you had been able to ignore it. Posting it gives it validity, which is probably what she wants.

I’ve read your blog for several years and while you have changed the focus to more sewing than knitting, I still think if it as a crafts blog and enjoy it. Since my daughters sing and play piano, I also enjoy when you post about those activities. Please delete that comment from your mind and keep blogging as you have been!

  97. Lurker de-lurking.
DH’s summation when I read him the comment was, “Stop focusing on yourself on your blog!” Pretty funny.

I miss the knitting – of course I do. But I keep reading because I like your writing AND you are doing something I cannot -sew. It is neat, and it is somewhat voyeuristic-ally fun to watch you figure out what works for you.

  98. For the last month on The Real Simple website they have been discussing this very issue and in particular the kinds of hurtful things people feel able to say in comments like these. I personally believe that in this day and age there is even more reason to mind our manners and to remember that people who write blogs are often sharing all or most of the parts of who they are with us and that is a good thing. I really like your bog because you come across as a real person who goes through all the things that real people do and that is very reassuring. I say bring back manners to all our electronic transcations including comments on blogs. As my Mother would say if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all.

  99. Many people forget that a blog is, in essence, an online journal that the writer chooses to make public. This means that readers are choosing to read something that is written with no specific audience in mind (in general). Those who are personally offended by any change in content should choose to stop reading without the personal attack. This is not a form of entertainment one has paid money to subscribe to (in which case, perhaps a consumer comment might be appropriate. This is free information/entertainment and should be treated as such.
I would be disappointed if you took this person seriously, as she has clearly turned blog-reading into something more than entertainment. Perhaps she can start her own blog with her own preferred content, and hope that others respect the space she has created. I know I respecct yours!

  100. I love your blog! Your writing is interesting, informative and just plain fun. I look forward to your posts and have read them for years. You are very talented in many, many fields and the fact that you are willing to share your varied experiences with everyone is so generous and wonderful! Keep on writing whatever you want- you have more friends than you know about, who so enjoy it all. You are a very sweet person!

  101. I’m another former lurker. I was so saddened that you had to read such hatefulness to start your day. I’ve been enjoying your blog since this past fall, and have felt nothing but positive vibes from all that you’ve shared. I think that a large part of the wonderfulness of the web is that we can choose to share as much or as little of our whole selves as we are comfortable with, and so can begin to relate more fully with one another in a multi-dimensional way. Kinda like real human beings, you know? I almost commented when you started your tea journey story, because, as it turns out, that company is headquartered less than 30 minutes from me, and I never even knew, so I wanted to thank you for sharing that resource and enriching my little world! In return, let me feed your coffee fix with another awesome resource – armenocoffee.com. Also in MA, they import, grind and ship the most wonderful coffees ever! So, let’s raise a cup and toast to all the goodness that has come your way today!

  102. Well, I’m chiming in too (along with the other 120 or so people). Your blog comes to my Google Reader and when I peeked at it at work today, I knew that I would come back tonight (from home) and comment.

What BOSH! I’m so sorry that person made you upset and cry. I like your blog (mostly for sewing content) but because you’re interesting. It’s cool to hear about your journey to fitness and trying tea and all that stuff. I honestly don’t get (or feel) the need to comment negatively. I control the mouse, and can click away to someone else.

Hang in and feel better – look at all the people who felt (like me) and had to say something.

  103. Honestly, I think her comment is less about you and more about her. She seems to be a deeply unhappy person. As has already been said, it’s your blog and you can write about whatever you want. Personally I enjoy reading blogs about real people with a real life. Thanks for sharing and don’t let the troll get you down!

  104. You are one of the most endearing and inspiring people out there in Internet land. Please don’t let the negative comments worry you. Keep doing what you are doing. I so enjoy reading your blog and think you are a little doll. You do inspire people with your talent and creativity. I never respond to blogs, but felt that I had to let you know how I felt. Be happy and don’t ever stop being you.

  105. This is my second time commenting (I commented on one of the body image posts as well) and I think it takes a lot of guts to say what you have said about body image and then follow up with posts on being HEALTY! Way to go! I originally read your blog and still do because of the sewing and knitting contents, but I also truly enjoy the excercise and healthy eating posts. And you are correct in that it doesn’t over shadow the sewing content; not that it’s a problem if it did: YOU are the author and plus I enjoy your perspective. Keep up the good work!

  106. I did not read all the previous comments, so I don’t know what everyone else said. I do want to say, that you should ignore (and delete) all negative comments and do not let them get to you! (I know, easy to say, hard to do.) This is your blog. You go ahead and post whatever you please. If any particular post is of no interest to the reader, they can skim over and go away. I love to see your sewing and knitting. I do hope that you continue to inspire with your lovely work.

  107. I still love your blog, and I’m sorry you received a nasty comment. 😦 Though, I will say — if you have the heart to play through Blitzball, you’re a better person than me. I loved FFX, but Blitzball, uck!

    1. I think Blitzball is why I never finished the game the first time. This time I’ve bribed my husband to play that part for me. I swear, those games never end, and it all makes no sense!

  108. I second (and third, and fourth…) everything that has been said enough. Don’t let a troll ruin your day – I for one enjoy reading about whatever you choose to write about.

  109. Kudos to you for such a thoughtful reply. Don’t let this person get you down… that is just what she wanted to do, and for what reason? If you don’t like someone’s blog STOP READING IT! You hit the nail on the head – who would dare to be so rude in person? Don’t give it another thought. The rest of us feel lucky that you share your world with us and we like to read about new things you are into. Wouldn’t life be boring if no one ever developed a new interest or skill?

And kudos to you for getting healthy. It’s not just the overweight that should be exercising. I think it’s great that you’ve blogged about this and it has absolutely nothing to do with being self-centered.

    Take care!

  110. I also first came across your blog because of your knitting. I kept reading it, because I liked it. And, coincidentally, even though your interests have changed, mine have too! I got my first sewing machine, you started to focus more on sewing. I started taking Zumba classes, you start exercising! 🙂 A blog is very personal, and you don’t owe anyone anything. If someone no longer finds your posts entertaining, they should simply stop reading, not try to cut you down for no good reason! Keep it up!

  111. Apparently this person, someone you probably don’t know and don’t want to know, isn’t ready to do anything but read about sewing and knitting. Life is about much more than that. Although I realize it is hurtful to be told this in the manner in which it was address, I too agree with the others: it is our choice what we write and what we read. She doesn’t pay you to write your blog, it was a privilege to her. So be it, there will be others. If you passed her in the street you wouldn’t know her and her opinion would not matter. Move on. You’ve become better for what you are doing for yourself. Put this past you and don’t even think about people who choose to be so judgmental. Looking for more great posts. Oh, if you want, send this to the smarty and I’ll take her on;)
    Jennifer

  112. Wow! What a horrible comment! I’ve followed your blog for a few months now and I love your posts! Sure, I really like seeing all the lovely things you sew, as they’re so inspiring, but I like reading everything else you want to throw in the mix too! Just keep writing whatever you want to write and the rest of us will still be here, enjoying every post. Don’t let the (extremely!) rude comment get you down. Just let all the positive comments you receive push it out of your mind.

    Good luck on your game!

  113. wow. I’m totally speechless! I read all your posts, though I’m not sure I’ve ever commented before. but this got to me and now I have to say something! I’ve had negative comments thrown to me via my blog and emailed directly to me, but this seems really personal somehow. try to remember that this probably has a whole lot more to do with them than you, and yes, as everyone else has said here, this is your blog and people can choose to not read it and move on.

personally, I enjoy hearing the behind the scenes of the blogs I read. most of them are all style/sewing/fashion/decor related, but the insight to the person makes the writer more human to me, so I have enjoyed your posts on your health and fitness. and no, it doesn’t seem to be at a level of unhealthy obsessiveness!

anyway, keep your head up, keep your blog going just as you want it too, and try your best to remember that this is their issue to deal with, and not yours. those of us that like your blog will keep reading and enjoying it 🙂

  114. I don’t think I have ever posted a comment on your blog before, but I have been reasons it for quite a while. For the most part, I read blogs that are about sewing or fashion. Most of these blogs also include a good bit of non-sewing/ fashion stuff too. I like to see that others are human too! I particularly like your blog because I feel like I can relate to you, at least from what I have read. I have a similar personality as far as wanting to learn all I can about a subject. I just want to say that I appreciate your blog and your willingness to share!!

  115. Part of what makes your blog great is your “voice”. I read ALOT of apparel sewing blogs (all I can find) and my favorites are the ones where you feel like you know the girl (or guy) writing it. I feel disconnected from the bloggers that only do reviews or tutorials without making it personal. Thank you for letting us in, even though I’m never going to make that smoothie, I appreciate that you share those little things with us. It’s part of what makes you YOU and your blog unique.

  116. I have been following your blog for quite some time now on bloglovin, though I never comment, so maybe I am more of a stalker : )

I stumbled upon your blog because of sewing, yes true. But after reading a few of your posts, I actually when back through and read your entire blog from the beginning, and I LOVED IT. I love how you seem like a real person, with a real life and a real job and real problems/issues and real talent to do all the things you do. I crack up often reading your blog because we seem like we have the same personality/sense of humor/ likes/dislikes, it’s like you’re a kindred spirit.

You let all of us fans in on your little corner of the universe, and we keep coming back not just to see your latest sewing project, but to hear what YOU have been up to. So as for your troll’s comment to pick a better focal point than yourself? I can’t think of a better focal point. Keep on rockin’ on, you’re awesome!

  117. Wow! I’m so sorry that someone would write such a horrible comment. We are meant to encourage one another not tear down. I’ve enjoyed all of your blogs. I have been inspired to sew, exercise, eat better, sing and paint a blue wall!!! Keep sharing your heart and your life no matter what direction God takes you.
    Many blessings.
    Dee

  118. Agree with all the above comments. I just found your blog, and it’s great. Where has common courtesy gone when a person you don’t even know feels compelled to send you such a rude comment? Especially when this is your blog…your space. Good riddance.

  119. I read your blog throgh google reader and rarely comment but now I had to. I am impressed with your answer to such a comment. I would have said something along the lines of “you silly woman, there is absolutely nothing that forces you to read MY blog, where I post what I want. If you don’t like then JUST DON’T READ IT!!Obviously, you are a lot calmer and wiser than I am…

I really enjoy reading your blog – keep up the good work!!

  120. Add me to the long list of people who like your blog just the way it is. If you want to branch out and post about other things besides sewing, that’s fine by me (well, unless it’s something I consider really icky, like taxidermy ;-). Hopefully you’re feeling better by now and can be amused by Rochelle’s delusional arrogance rather than upset.

  121. Another first time commenter coming out of the woodwork to add to others comments – it is YOUR blog so blog what you darn well please! Please don’t let the negative commenters get to you. We all read your blog and enjoy what you write.

  122. I’m late to this, but just wanted to add ‘take no notice’! This is only the third time I’ve commented on yr blog – once about your post re yr body issues and also on your love of tea which I share – but I read nearly all the posts and enjoy them. I really can’t understand
Why someone would comment in this way, if she doesn’t like the blog anymore then she can stop reading it! xxx

  123. I totaly get your sentiment (or so I think ;P) – just last month I found some really hateful comments under my posts going as far as cursing my genetic line for producing such a bad user of english language… (as it’s visible I’m not a native). I tell myself it doesn’t bother me but it does and I can’t really give any advice on how to deal with such people. It’s your life, your blog and not a service to “Rochelle”, me or any reader. It’s so immature of “Rochelle” to have such expectations towards your blog, nobody has the right to comment like that, so just don’t bother yourself with her. I found your blog 2 or 3 years ago and visit regulary though I’ve never commented. My crafty timeline is reversed comparing to yours cause I started with sewing and then after finding your blog I decided to take up knitting which sticks with me to this day (good place to say: thank you! :)). I’m not a fan of tea and I’m allergic to sports but I find it nice that you’re sharing things that bring some added value to your life – it’s very inspiring even if I don’t share those interests.

  124. I’m so sorry that some selfish thoughtless fool upset you so much – but good on you for standing up to them and not taking that kind of bullying! And I don’t see her trying to comment back to this post – ha!
I agree with what everyone else has said here – it’s your blog, you can write what you like…and based on the comments, you have a large and loyal following, so keep up the good work!

  125. First I want to say that I’m sorry that that person made you feel bad. Your blog is on the top of my favorites list, and that includes all topics you write about. Don’t change a thing.

What struck me about the nasty comment was the sense of entitlement the writer revealed, as if she was a paying customer and had gotten chocolate cake with peach ice cream instead of vanilla. As usual such things reveal more about the complainer than that which is being complained about.

There are and always will be nasty people in this world. We just have to steel ourselves to not let them bring us down, and be glad we aren’t one of them.

  126. People are stupid. Not to mention bold when they don’t have to say hurtful things to someones face. Your blog is wonderful! I love the sewing, knitting, and the house hunting/decorating! It’s YOUR blog and you can write about whatever you want! It doesn’t have to be all 1 topic all the time! Keep on keeping on! You have a great blog and I love to read it and see your photos!

  127. It’s definitely not your obligation to entertain one particular individual. If they don’t want to read your blog, they don’t have to read it… it’s as simple as that. It’s a pity that they felt the need to tear you down in the process, but it really is their problem and not yours!

  128. I’ve read some of the replies and let me just add one more opinion. Write what you want to write on your OWN dang blog. Most of us are creative people and enjoy multiple areas of interest. Yes, I knit (rarely) and I sew (a lot) but I like reading about food and exercise too. Don’t let that hateful comment change what you’re doing. I just had to come out of lurk mode to say keep on keeping on 🙂

  129. DO NOT take any notice. Nobody has a right to be nasty about anybody’s blog. You write about what is real to you and it is what makes you real to us. Keep writing about the things you need to write about. Don’t let one person’s negative comment stand out above all the poistive comments you get.

    Take care

  130. I was so fired up reading this yesterday that I had a big long comment ready in my head! I’ve cooled off a bit now and just wanted to simply say that IMO, this is YOUR blog. You can write about whatever the heckaroony you please!

You have been one of the main sources of inspiration in my knitting life. I am still amazed at all the gorgeous sweaters and scarves and hats and socks and everything you’ve knitted. My wrists just can’t keep up with the pace you maintained. So inspiring on so many levels.

I think when someone “attacks” you in such a way, it is because they are on a negative frequency and are simply taking it out on you. They are the one with the problem and obviously not you. You are fabulous in so many ways!

Thank you so much for writing this blog and sharing your passions with us!! It means a great deal to me!

  131. I can see the point – 3 out of the last 4 posts are not on the subject I subscribed to this blog to read about either. And it might be helpful to you to know why someone was leaving, in case you had a drastic dip in readership and wondered why – but they turned it into an opportunity to have a completely unwarranted whinge. Passive aggressive much?

  132. I read that comment, too and i thought it was horrible. i don’t comment much but i was going to write about that…it is so wrong, so wrong on so many levels that it is not even worth spending time dwelling on it. i understand it is painful to be the target of such nasty comments but i learned over time that some things/people are just not worth the time or energy. I am sorry to say it but she is one of them…that’s all. i love your blog and i actually like the break from all knitting and sewing posts from time to time. And thanks to you I started on the Ballet Body program and i am loving it so thank you for that
When people don’t like a blog, they should just stop reading it …it’s not like you are charging a subscription. Cheer up, things like this are not worth your tears 🙂

    1. I’m glad you love Balletbody – I think it’s such a great program that I’m pleased I could spread the word. Thank you for your kind comment – it made me feel better!

  133. I don’t often comment, but read and enjoy your blog very much. I was attracted by the sewing as I am learning myself and find your reviews very helpful. But you write with such honesty and intellegence that I am interested in whatever YOU want to write about on YOUR blog. I hope the huge number of supportive comments you have received here will convince you that the problem is all ‘Rochelle’s’ and not yours – apart from anything else it is just bad manners! Keep up the good work, and good luck finishing Final Fantasy! xxx

  134. You shouldn’t have to defent yourself for wanting to eat healthy or for working out. This blog is first and foremost for you, so it can be whatever you want it to me. I would ignore such ignorant comments.

  135. I am so sorry to hear this. I can see how this might really hurt you, after sharing something so personal as your eating habits in the past a few months ago.
Please forget about it. I don’t think your workouts are unhealthy, I think they are inspiring.
I started jogging about a year ago, and I was never a sporty type before. And I am also really enjoying it, I can run for an hour now. I never thought I would be able to do that!
Just enjoy your hobbies, like you always do!

  136. This is just sad. You keep expressing yourself as you choose. It’s your time and your thoughts- she wasted hers, I don’t consider your time to be wasted.

  137. Wow, I really like your blog. I’m always just glad to see new posts and I LOVED the one on tea, and I’m not into tea at all! Please don’t let someone that rude influence you in the least. I really like the things you sew and your honesty about not liking them sometimes, and how you kind of work out some of your own thoughts through your blog. Please know that just like in real life there just some dumb aZZ’s that have to try and get attention through cruelty. Wow! Best wishes to you. And hey post another smoothie hehhee

  138. I love your blog! Carry on just as you always have. Who cares if this person reads it? You’re better off not having her as a reader anyway.

  139. You don’t have to jusify yourself or what you chose to write on your blog. It’s so hard not to let comments like that get to you but just remember that you should be yourself, nothing more or less. You can’t please everyone, nor should you try to. I enjoy reading your blog and the things you’ve made have inspired me many times so don’t let horrible comments get you down.

  140. I just wanted to join the chorus of those who love your blog and don’t want you to change a thing! You have been an inspiration to me as I’ve started sewing, developed my style, and started my own blog. Yours was the first garment sewing blog I read and it’s still one of my absolute favorites, mostly because I feel like I know you since you’ve always been so open in your posts! Honestly I feel like one of my friends has been peesonally attacked and I’m hurt and mad on your behalf, even though we’ve never met. Thank you for everything you’ve written and please keep it up!

    1. ha, I just noticed that somehow I ended up with the word “peesonally” instead of “personally” in my comment… stupid new iphone. How did that escape the overzealous autocorrect?

  141. Seriously, if somebody doesn’t like your blog, no one is ‘making’ them read it. Please write about whatever you want. IT IS YOUR BLOG! You don’t need to explain yourself to anyone.

  142. What an eloquent riposte! I think your blog has become one of the most well-rounded blogs I read. Obviously you cannot sew 24/7, so it’s great that you let us know about other aspects of your life. I love reading about exercise/cooking/computer games!
Three none-sewing posts in 5 months out of how many hundreds of posts since 2006? If that’s all people can find to complain about they need to get a life!
Keep at it, you make wonderful garments – your Colette Rooibos and that lovely blue wall are what drew me to your blog in the first place!

  143. Bravo, and hope that person gets a life. You don’t anyone anything w.r.t. what you blog about. I’ve always felt your writing to be in the spirit of sharing – whatever topic you approach and moor at for whatever length of time. May peace return to your spirit.

  144. Obviously that comment was unkind, but the other odd thing about it is that most all of the blogs I follow, which are mostly knitting and sewing related, share other elements of their personal lives as well. That is, ultimately, what makes them fun. Otherwise, a person could just go to the library, take out a “how-to” book, and be done with it! Your blog is enjoyable and interesting. I always read it when I have time, and appreciate your taking time to share stuff on it.

  145. What ever happened to “if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.” I love your blog. I have tried several patterns simply because of your recommendations, and have loved each and every one. Let it go, “like water off a duck’s back,” because you have (obviously) many fans.

  146. Hi, I love your blog, you sound like a very well-rounded person in touch with life. I love your sewing and have been inspired by many of your projects. Don’t let one person’s comment change you or make you sad. Just keep on blogging…I love it. Theresa

  147. Please keep talking about yourself! I like you, Jessica. I wish you were in my town because I’d enjoy getting to know you more over some good strong coffee or a new tea.

Many others have said good things already. I just wanted to let you know that I like your blog and you, just the way you are!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ((((((((((((((((Hugs))))))))))))

  148. Your blog. You share whatever you want. If someone wishes to read another blog instead, they are free to do so. I am sorry your feelings are hurt and I feel sorry for this person too. I hope they have more to do with their life than to hurt others. That is just sad. Enjoy your blog.

  149. I started reading your blog 4 maybe 5 years ago when it was strictly a knitting blog. I stopped reading it when I took a break from knitting. I found it again this past year and was thrilled that you were into sewing. I don’t mind all the chatter about other topics. It makes reading your blog more interesting ; like a real person is behind all it. So, keep up the great writing. I’ll be reading.

  150. Dear Jessica, after reading your last blog I felt I had to send some sort of response. I read your blog all the time because I love the outfits you sew and it’s so interesting finding out something about somebody on the other side of the world (I’m in Australia) who seems to lead such an artistic life. I like the fact that we now hear about your other activities apart from sewing. I like the fact that you are sharing things with us and I especially like the fact that you are such a prolific sewer and blogger – it means I don’t have to wait days to see what’s going on in your world. Gosh, after reading that I realised I sound a bit like a stalker! Seriously, don’t get despondent about some nasty person’s cruel words. That person does not have a say in how you set out your blog or in the content and instead of just switching off has decided to vent their vitriol on you. I know it’s easy to say, but please don’t pay too much attention to her. Look at all the positive comments you’ve received. Doesn’t that show you just how people regard you? Try and not get too down about it all and please don’t let this one hateful person get to you.

  151. As others have said, it’s your blog and you should write whatever you like in it. It’s not as if that person is paying to read it or has any other legitimate claim to dictate or expect anything in particular.

I find your blog inspiring. It was one of the reasons I decided to teach myself to sew last year and I turn to your sewing pages over and over again to learn more.

  152. I had to do a lot of scrolling to get to bottom. I don’t support the post this person left. At the same time, I have been guilty of not liking what goes on at blog that I faithfully followed for a few years and rather than do what this person has done I simply stopped following it. What did she think she would gain from her comment? Feedback for some internet companies are a valuable gauge as to how their customers view them and how well they are serving them. Look at it as one dissatisfied customer and move on (note the responses you’ve got from this post alone!).

  153. it’s easy to say it from my side, but you shouldn’t take it too personnally. Even if you had wanted to change totally your blog to a ‘workout blog’, then why not? It’s *your* blog, you can do whatever pleases you. Of course I’d be a bit sad 🙂 but that would be my problem, not yours. Keep blogging!

  154. I try to always work on the principle “if you haven’t got anything nice to say then say nothing”. There was no need for that person to be so spiteful, but hopefully they will read the comments here, and your reaction, and have the courtesy to send you an apology.

  155. That was a ridiculous comment. I would assume if you’re going to take the time out to read about someone’s crafting hobbies then you’d also like to know a thing or two about the person as well. No need to dwell on this ridiculous comment – good riddance to them.

  156. Well that was spiteful to say the least! Blogs are about sharing information. They are like a personal journal that you choose to share with others – it is all about you and your interests. You can and should write about anything that strikes your fancy – it is a way for your readers to get to know you at a deeper level than just a list of projects you completed or tutorials you want to share. Hopefully, this person will take a moment to consider that they have made you feel bad. Words are dangerous things when wielded by the wrong people! I love your blog and am glad that you are including/expanding your posts – it lets me see what else we have in common, other than just sewing 🙂

  157. I love your blog! When I first found it I spent hours just reading all your posts (ALL of them, regardless of topic) and being totally captivated! I found my very first knit project, and the nerve to actually complete it, because of yoru blog. I can see from these comments that for every 1 bad, you must have so many more good!

Please don’t be discouraged and please don’t stop what you are doing. I appreciate that you allow us into your life and thoughts and share with us honestly. I hope you never stop!

    Thank you!!

  158. What a silly thing to write! “Rochelle” should not get you down. I guess she had the mistaken impression that your blog is meant purely for education, instruction, and the like, rather than as a personal blog that you fill with content that you choose.

You don’t sound self-absorbed when you write. Let’s get that straight. You also do not sound obsessed about any of the topics you pursue – you seem excited and interested and it’s infectious (in a good way).

When you write about knitting and sewing, you don’t read like a teacher, you read like a friend sharing her latest “thing” that she’s into right now. And the same goes for fitness, diet, etc. Keep the content you like; ignore this woman’s comment.

Also, apparently (according to psychological studies) it takes 5 positive responses to get back to the same place of esteem we felt prior to 1 negative comment. Here’s hoping 200 positive responses will push your esteem through the roof!

  159. Uh, I’m not sure who Rochelle thinks she is- but last time I checked, this was your blog, and you have every right to post whatever you want, sewing related or otherwise! If she doesn’t want to read it, she doesn’t have to.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with trying to live a healthier life through diet and exercise. Goodness knows I need to improve in that area- so I for one appreciate the good examples of others that can help get me motivated- like yourself!

I hope all of the positive comments you have received from this post will buoy you up and not stay haunted by the few negative ones. Good for you for addressing her comment in such a graceful and humble way. I hope she was just having a bad day and is not always as self righteous and judgmental person as she portrayed herself through her comment.

  160. WOW that woman was a serious swear word! Your blog is one of my favorites and i feel previlaged that you share your life with me (who after all is a total stranger) and that womans needs to get off her high horse and take some resonsibility for her own actions. Afterall its much easier to just not read your blog than be mean and nasty.

  161. I too have never commented but feel compelled. I first started reading your blog for the knitting but I am fascinated by your sewing and have grown to look forward to see what you might be sewing. I think it is quite normal to talk about what is going on in your life – cooking, exercise, etc. I like it just fine.

  162. It’s been quite a while since I’ve left a comment, but I have been reading your blog all along, because it is interesting. I think you are a very interesting person, and I really enjoy reading the things you share, whether they are about sewing, knitting (my personal favorite topic), or whatever else happens to be going on. Please don’t let mean-spirited comments like this one affect your contributions to this life or this blog. Stitchywitch has always been one of my favorites! It is very real and grounded, because it doesn’t show only the pretty and perfect things, and that is why I keep coming back.

  163. That comment actually says more about the commenter than you. I enjoy all facets of your blog. I knit. I have sewn before, but not much. And I see your blog as primarily sewing, but obviously done in a way that fascinates. I love your posts and appreciate that you share all your facets of life. To someone who doesn’t exercise, maybe 5 times a week seems excessive, but to those of us who know better, it means health. Good for you. And THANK YOU FOR BEING YOU.

  164. The whole point of the blogosphere is that there is so much diversity, so many niche fusions of interests, and every blogger has their idiosyncrasies which differentiates them from mainstream media. If the commenter isn’t interested in your current combination of sewing + smoothies, they can move on and find another blog that matches their interests. Or they can pay for a sewing magazine. They’re not paying you for a sewing magazine service so frankly you can write about whatever you want to write about!

Oh and for what it’s worth I adore your blog. Even if I don’t do much exercise myself I totally empathise with your motivation to get healthy. Plus you sew more than anyone! xxx

  165. I’ve been following your blog for a few years now. And I like how you not only talks about craft. I like that you share with us your singing videos, try to eat healthy, and your work out. It’s inspiring, because I am trying to better my family eating habits and work out too. I do miss the knitting contents. But I’m fine with it as I follow other knitting blogs too.
    Thanks for sharing with us!

  166. It breaks my heart that you got such a nasty comment. No need to justify your blog and what you post. Just can’t believe someone took the time and energy to be so mean – try to remember all of the positive energy and hugs your other readers are sending to you!

  167. Yikes! I can’t believe someone would leave a comment like that. I’m not even sure what words to use to describe how rude that is. Ignore it the best you can. That person has a problem! You can blog about anything you want. Blogs are a personal thing and if someone else doesn’t like it, they don’t have to read it. I’ve been popping over for a visit from time to time for a few years. I’ve enjoyed the sewing and knitting but I’ve also found the moving, paint colors, and your recent and more personal thoughts on life to be interesting too. I know you probably don’t need any comments after so many but I wanted to add my bit of support to help you not worry or feel bad about what that person said and keep doing what you love and blogging how you’d like. You’re doing great! 🙂

  168. What a terrible thing to say to someone about their blog. Your blog isn’t to serve the crafting interest of others, and I actually really liked the focus on clean living- everyone should think about their health and take steps to be healthier, whereas not everyone knits or sews. Whoever sent you that comment is horribly rude and obviously ill-mannered. Visiting someone’s blog is like visiting their home for a cup of tea or coffee- you don’t sit there accepting your free beverage and then loudly criticize the host. Although I do feel a bit sorry for that person, though- she must be so miserable in real life, judging people who aren’t living their lives exactly the way she wants them to.

  169. It’s your blog so you are free to write whatever you choose to write about. What’s her problem anyway? You are not here to entertain anyone.

I have been reading your blog for years, and always find it interesting, whatever you choose to write about! keep it up.

Don’t go overboard with sweet n low though.

  170. Sorry you received a nasty comment but that comment says far more about that person than you- ie she is the one with the problem. Keep up your fantastic blogging – you obviously have lots of supporters.

  171. This is just an out and out rude comment that noone should be leaving on anybody’s blog. I completely understand that it made you sad and angry. Yes, i think people sometimes forget common decency on the internet and act a lot more bold than they would in real life, finally letting out all that pent up anger (just look at youtube video comments, they are the worst!). Try not to worry about these people. It’s your blog and you can do what you like. Even if you were obsessed and only wrote about work-outs, so be it. anybody who doesnt like your blog doesnt need to read it. I like your blog and will continue reading it!

  172. That post seems very distorted! Thanks for all the knowledge and experience you share. It’s generous of you to take the time to convey all you’ve learned. I know I learn a lot from your blog. Also, I’ve enjoyed when you’ve written workouts. It’s inspiring.

  173. Sista girl… Its your damn blog and you are free to post whatever you desire and must say I enjoy your workout post… …keeping it coming.

  174. I audibly gasped when I read this comment I was so shocked that someone would be that mean spirited and nasty. I’ve been reading your blog for a long time and I hope that you continue to go with the flow of what interests you and what’s important to you. It always interests me and I’ll continue to keep on reading!

  175. Hey Rochelle,

Don’t let the door hitcha on the way out…

I mean, really? On what planet is that considered even remotely acceptable behavior?

    Stupid troll.

  176. Sorry I’m so late with a reply but I just wanted to say how much I LOVE reading your blog! I think the number of comments to this prove I’m not the only one! WOW!!!! Keep doing what you’re doing. Hey, I’ll keep reading:)
